2025 SPRING BREAKFAST EVENT – CELEBRATING OUR 65TH ANNIVERSARY!

Over 200 guests gathered to celebrate our youth and to hear an inspiring message from Pastor Socheat Chum, Chaplain for the Minnesota Vikings who shared a message about finding our identity that is so important to all of us, but particularly to our young people. Also included in this year’s program was a historical perspective on how the organization has evolved since its founding by Elwood “Woody” Larson in 1960 to where it is today, led by Greg Serviss (Board Chair) and Jim Larson (Board Member and Woody’s son). We honored our youth who will be graduating from high school this year, many of whom have spent several years participating in HHYD programs. We also recognized our Young Woman of the Year, Labria Atkins and Young Man of the Year, Zavier Alexander. All of these young people are getting ready to go out into the world – and to know that HHYD played a small role (or more) in their life is very rewarding.

We are grateful to all who attended the event to learn more about our programs, to meet our staff, and meet some of the youth involved in our programs. To-date we have raised $115K towards our $200K, but there is still time to donate. Double the impact of your gift – new gifts or gifts of $600 or more from a current donor will be matched up to an additional $25K.

And finally, thanks to co-emcees Collin Barr (Ryan Companies – retired) and Sharell Letam (2023 Young Man of the Year), and to the staff of the Edina Country Club who helped make it such an enjoyable event. Most of all, we thank you Lord!!

WINTER SPORTS BANQUET

On April 12th we held our annual winter sports banquet. Our 5 basketball teams (5u, 6u, 11u, 12u and girls 13u) had a great season and we celebrated their success with a family event that featured a basketball showcase and a meal. Our 11u team even won the city championship! See event photos below!

TEENS HBCU TRIP TO THE EAST COAST

Helping to prepare our students for post-secondary education and/or careers are very important aspects of both our academic and teen programs. This includes visits to local college and universities, however this year we began something new and special. During Spring Break this year, we invited 12 of our students (10 girls and 2 boys) and a few chaperones, on a trip to the East Coast to visit several Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s). These included Virginia State University, Hampton University (also in Virginia), and Howard University in Washington D.C., in addition to some sightseeing in the Nation’s Capital. There are no HBCU’s in Minnesota, so it was particularly important to travel and expose our students to additional options as they plan for their futures. It was a wonderful experience for all involved. Check out some of the pics!

CHURCH SPOTLIGHT

We appreciate and thank our friends from River Valley Church who showed up on Saturday, May 9th to help us clean up our property and replace the wood chips around our playground. The playground is an important area at HHYD that gets a lot of use during the summer. The weather was great so everyone enjoyed working outdoors and making this a beautiful area for our youth to enjoy.

Revelation 3:8

In 1960 our Founder, Elwood “Woody” Larson answered God’s call to serve the children and families of North Minneapolis and lead them to Christ. And 65 years later we remain true to his vision.

Black History Night

On February 19th we held our Annual Black History Event where our youth shared their talents and knowledge of Black history. Among them, our youth choir performed ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing.’

The food served represented the rich culinary traditions of the African diaspora and it was delicious! It included Jollof rice from West Africa, potato greens from Liberia, jerk chicken from the Caribbean, and soul food, which is deeply rooted in Black American culture.

Over 150 children and families gathered for this special event and the meal was served by HHYD staff, the HHYD Board of Directors, and volunteers from Holmes Corporation, JE Dunn Construction, Trinity Lutheran Church of Minnehaha Falls, Eagle Brook Church – Downtown Campus, and Starland Charities. We are grateful to all who helped to make this event possible. It was a wonderful evening, and we look forward to celebrating again next year.

BOARD SPOTLIGHT – JIM LARSON

hospitality house board secretary james larson

Over the years, I’ve served on the Board of Hospitality House Youth Development (HHYD) at different times. I currently serve as Board Secretary. My father was Woody Larson, who founded HHYD in 1960.

Being involved with HHYD has given me the opportunity to honor my dad’s legacy and his passionate love for this ministry. His desire for young people to come to faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior never wavered. His selfless example is an inspiration to me.

I’ve experienced HHYD from the time I was a child. I played on the “Cubs” youth baseball team as a young boy. Many times older HHYD youth would visit our family’s home. Some of these kids became like family to us.

I admire the sacrifice and dedication of our staff who come alongside HHYD youth and their families. It has been rewarding to see the impact that HHYD has had on kids, their families and the Northside community over the last 65 years. My greatest hope is that people come to faith in Christ through the ministry of HHYD. In addition, HHYD can provide a “home away from home” where kids can experience love, support, academic help and can participate in other activities such as athletic teams.

I attended Robbinsdale High School and the University of Wisconsin – Madison. I continued to play baseball through my university years. After graduating, I had the opportunity to travel to several Latin American countries as part of an Overseas Crusades evangelistic baseball team. I am a real estate broker. I have served on various church committees and in lay leadership roles. My wife Kerri and I live in Maple Grove. We have 3 adult children and one (soon to be two) grandchildren.

CHRISTMAS WITH DIGNITY RECAP:

We are deeply grateful to the individuals, churches, and businesses whose generous donations of funds, toys, gift cards, and other items made it possible to bless the North Minneapolis community this Christmas.

This year, our annual Christmas with Dignity event was held on Friday, December 13, serving 415 families and 1,249 children.

Seeing the joy on the faces of shoppers as they selected gifts for their loved ones is a powerful reminder of the difference this event makes. Their brighter holiday season is a testament to the kindness of our community. At HHYD, we witness God’s love and grace daily, but Christmas is a particularly special time that encourages us to be thankful and care for one another.

This incredible event would not have been possible without the dedication of nearly 300 volunteers who gave their time and energy to make it a success. We were even fortunate to have volunteers join us from the Minneapolis Police Department—what an amazing team effort!

Give Today to support this important Ministry.

MN VIKING STEPHON GILMORE VISIT:

On December 3, Stephon Gilmore, current MN Viking star cornerback, took a break from his demanding football schedule to visit us, bringing Christmas excitement to approximately 100 youth from North Minneapolis. The gymnasium was adorned in purple and gold, with Christmas gifts nestled under the trees. Each child received a gift handpicked from their personal wish list, purchased and personally delivered by Stephon.

In addition to their gifts, the youth were thrilled to receive beanies, drawstring bags, and other Vikings merchandise. The day was filled with holiday cheer, delicious desserts, and warm fellowship.

We are deeply grateful to Stephon, who was graciously recovering from an injury, for spending time with our youth, engaging in conversations, posing for photos, and signing autographs. Special thanks go to Ashley Madrigal of AP Brand Group for organizing the event, the Minnesota Vikings organization, He Gets Us, Amy’s Cupcake Shoppe, Thumbs Cookies, WCCO News, and the many dedicated volunteers who made this memorable day possible. Stephon is always welcome to visit again!

ANNUAL FALL BANQUET RECAP:

On November 3 we hosted our annual Fall Banquet at the Metropolitan Ballroom & Clubroom in Golden Valley, MN. Over 300 guests enjoyed an evening of celebration emceed by WCCO’s Mike Max that included a program update from Executive Director Charles Moses, a dance performance by our youth, and the presentation of our Female Christian Athlete of the Year to Kourtney Bellfield and Male Christian Athlete of the Year to Bishop Hooks.

In addition, powerful testimonies were shared by current student Sharell Letam, alumnus Tyrus Hayes, and retiring Program Director George Rowley. George talked about how God has been moving in his life since he joined HHYD as a volunteer in 1998. We are forever grateful to George and his family for their many years of dedicated service to our community.

And lastly, thanks to the generosity of so many, we were able to reach our goal of raising $180K, which included raising $16K through our silent auction. We are so appreciative of the support. Thanks to all who made this such a special event, including our event sponsors (Cornwell Companies LLC, KTIS 98.5, Northeast Bank, Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ), Be The Change MN, Painted Turtle Chocolatier) and the staff at the Metropolitan Ballroom & Clubroom. FIRST DAY OF THE SCHOOL YEAR:

On September 3, 2024, the beginning of the school year, the children showed up at HHYD for our afterschool program, excited to be with us. We even had some showing up who needed to be registered because they had heard about all the exciting things we have been doing at HHYD. The children hugged their friends they hadn’t seen during the summer, and to no surprise, they were extremely excited to see the teachers. Hugs and smiles filled the room.

We had staff introductions to the students and guidelines to help them throughout the school year. One guideline given was the scripture of the month, Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” After introductions, scripture, snack time, no wasting time, on to homework, and then fun time.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS:

Parallel Retail Group outing:

We had a blast hosting a group of brilliant kids from HHYD at our offices in August! They dove into the world of retail, got a behind-the-scenes look at what we do, and even had the chance to pitch their favorite brands to us. Talk about impressive—these kids are sharp! “If you’re looking to partner with an amazing non-profit that’s making waves with Minneapolis kids, check out HHYD.” Lauren Knisley

PRAYER WALK TO CURB CRIME:

Hospitality House Youth Development joined Twin Cities Church leaders to prayer-walk North Minneapolis on September 15th. The goal was harnessing the power of prayer to curb crime in North Minneapolis. Pastor Doris Allison of Proverbs Christian Fellowship Church helped lead us.

The prayer walk started at North Commons Park and ended at Lowry and Penn. About 20 folks from various churches and ministries participated.

“We have buried many gang members who were killed,” said Dave Halstensgard (a long-time supporter of HHYD), who worked on the north side for many years. “We have buried many people from fentanyl. I have seen what youth have been facing in this community, and it’s time to make a difference.”

“We all come together in prayer today for our community, for gun violence, for the drug infestation,” said Pastor Doris Allison of Proverbs Christian Fellowship Church.

Come join us! There are two (2) more Sundays at 2:00 (Sept 29th and Oct 6th). If you can’t attend, we at HHYD, being in the heart of North Minneapolis, request your continued prayer for our city.

12U HHYD FLAG FOOTBALL TEAM:

Hospitality House Youth Development (HHYD) has brought back Flag Football to our children, and they are loving it. It is believed that we have not had Flag Football teams since the 1980s. This year, we are starting with one team. Our 11U co-ed flag football team won their first game of the season with a strong effort on defense (4 interceptions) and an outstanding performance by the offense (6 Touchdowns)! Teamwork, great attitudes, sportsmanship, talent, hard work, and joy were on full display!

We are currently 2-1! GO, HHYD FLAG FOOTBALL TEAM! Next year, we plan to increase the number of teams, so if you desire to impact the North Minneapolis community through sports, come volunteer with HHYD.

Board Spotlight:

Brett McNeal

Hi, I am Brett McNeal and I recently joined the Board at Hospitality House Youth Development. I currently work for the Minneapolis Public Schools as their District Assistant Athletic Director. I grew up in North Minneapolis, attended Hospitality House Youth Development (HHYD) as a youth, and graduated from North Community High School.

I started playing basketball at HHYD in the 5th grade and became a member of a Bible study group in the 7th grade. HHYD’s Christ-based program resonated with my family and friends.

As a basketball standout, I earned the title of Minnesota Mr. Basketball. I went on to play and graduate from Western Kentucky University where I earned a degree in Communications and was inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame. I furthered my studies at Grace College, earning a master’s degree in Athletic Administration. My career has included Community Organizer, Administrative Politician, Executive Director, Human Resources Manager, High School Dean, basketball official & Athletic Director. My hobbies include golfing and reading.

I have been committed to fostering positive change in the lives of others and have used my roles as an athlete, coach, high school official, and administrator to inspire Christian transformation and leadership development in our youth. I look forward to engaging more of our HHYD alumni and the community to help our children get to know Christ personally.

I have been married for 25 years and am the proud father of five successful children.

We may have the next great architect, construction worker, or even the person who solves the housing issue for North Minneapolis and worldwide among us.

Below is the completed project:

Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ)

NAZ partnered with HHYD this Summer to provide a six-week training course designed for Middle School students. They focused on leadership, soft skills, and interpersonal skills development. Eleven HHYD students completed the training. At the end of the training, there was a graduation. Parents, HHYD staff, and some NAZ staff attended the event and celebrated with the students and their families.

Northeast Bank

It’s nice when a business in the community becomes more than just a business. We have been partners with Northeast Bank for many years, so when we got the invite to have lunch, we agreed immediately. It’s always nice when you can sit, have lunch, and catch up with partners who support the mission of helping the youth of North Minneapolis. There was no real agenda; we had no expectations, but they blessed HHYD with a check. We can’t thank them enough for all the support to our youth.

EXPERIENCES:

Fishing for Life

On August 21st, about a dozen youth participated in the Fishing for Life workshop. Afterward, we went fishing at Theodore Wirth Park. The following week, Fishing For Life took HHYD on a chartered fishing trip on Lake Mille Lacs. What an EXPERIENCE!

Vikings Training Camp:

Hospitality House Youth Development had a great time at Minnesota Vikings Training Camp. Our youth met Justin Jefferson, Coach Kevin O’Connell, and several other members of the Vikings organization. It was an EXPERIENCE they surely will not forget!

Chad Greenway Camp:

Former Vikings player Chad Greenway hosted the 17th Annual “Day to REACH” football camp at Hutchinson High School, with kindness being the main theme of the event. Four-time WNBA Champion Lindsay Whalen also showed her support. Thank you, Chad Greenway: “Day to REACH” camp team for the generous financial gift and for providing an EXPERIENCE for HHYD Youth.

Starland Charities provided a meal for the returning campers; pictured left to right are: Kristy Pink, Julia Pink, Corey Pink, and Karin Kokesch

Minnesota Lynx Girls Basketball Camp:

Thank you to the Minnesota Lynx for inviting HHYD girls to participate in their Basketball Camp. It’s all about the EXPERIENCE, and for that, we thank the Lynx.

Women’s Luncheon:

The Women Luncheon was held on July 25th and was a great success. Keonna Moses, MBA in education, was the guest speaker. She was dynamic and delivered a message about the education of our youth in North Minneapolis. The point that hit home for many is that children learn to read by 3rd grade and 4th grade and beyond that requires reading comprehension. Therefore, comprehension is a struggle if they don’t have a strong reading foundation by 3rd grade. Thank you, JE Dunn Construction, event sponsor.

We are always looking for tutors or people to read to or listen to a child read. Can you do that for the children of North Minneapolis? Provide the EXPERIENCE of seeing the world through reading!

Conflict Resolution with our teens:

Conflict Resolution /Lesson 1

Stacey, our new Program Director, is courageously tackling significant issues that have plagued North Minneapolis, including Conflict Resolution. The detrimental effects of unmanaged conflicts, often due to lack of training, have tragically led to the premature loss of young lives. Stacey has initiated a series with our Teens, equipping them with practical ways to navigate and resolve conflicts, thereby addressing a crucial need in our community.

Purpose of the first lesson:
There are different ways we (humanity) respond to conflict. Most of the time, we avoid dealing with issues positively. We are told indirectly and modeled that conflict is a negative thing. The purpose of this lesson was to abolish the myth, help the Teens reflect on how conflict resolution has been modeled for them, and give them some concrete ways of dealing with it. Students were given a list that explained the different approaches to conflict and some focus questions that asked how their environment (school, friends, family structure, and pop culture) influences them in dealing with conflict. This is our opening lesson, and students are excited about the content we will continue to share throughout the summer!

This program is a significant stride towards realizing Charles’s (HHYD Executive Director) vision for HHYD. It’s a beacon of hope, promising a future where our community is equipped with the necessary skills to resolve conflicts peacefully and constructively.

What’s Cooking at Hospitality House Youth Development:

This summer, our students are engaged in a series of activities, including academics, art, camps, and cooking. Here are 3rd graders preparing their personal pizzas for cooking in the oven. They loved it!

Give Today to support this important Ministry.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes Camp:

2024 FCA Camp at North High School Football field. About 50 students and staff attended the week long event put on by local FCA crew.

Church Spotlight:

June 24-26: The Praying Pelicans brought in Duluth Gospel Tabernacle, and they spent three days cleaning, planting gardens, weeding, tutoring children, and playing with them. As if that wasn’t enough, they also delivered flyers to the houses in the neighborhood and painted. Last but not least, they ministered to the children with a skit about helping and lifting one another up. Because the majority of the group was young people, they ended the mission trip by playing a friendly game of basketball, which was bonding for the children.

Quote from the Youth volunteers:

  • “It’s Cool to work with kids. They are teachable, and I can see they care. It’s good to see. People are stuck on their opinions.”
  • “I saw that the children are eager to grow.”
  • “Kids are open; it’s good to know I had a purpose of being here.”
  • “Children are the closest to God.”
  • “I had fun doing things that aren’t fun to do, like cleaning closets.”
  • “The kids are lively, energetic and happy we are here.”
  • “Math is super hard for some of them, but they keep trying even when they fail.”

Adult volunteers:

  • “I sat with the 6th graders, and they didn’t need me to. I played a card game with them; I just wanted them to be themselves.”
  • “Although we don’t come from an area with the same struggles as these children, we can learn and benefit from being like them.”

A big shoutout to our amazing friends from River Valley’s Crosstown campus for joining us on Saturday, July 13, 2024, and generously serving at the Hub!

Community Partner Spotlight:

BUILD YOUR OWN CITY: No one would ever think that construction and children go together. HHYD and JE Dunn Construction have forged a unique partnership since early 2023. This year, they are supporting our Summer Spot program, bringing their love of construction and children together. Each Monday in July, students will learn what goes into building a city and then build their ideal city from cardboard, cereal boxes, toilet and paper towel rolls, etc. Thanks to this innovative collaboration, it’s exciting to introduce our children to a world of possibilities in a future career.

We had three groups of children who mapped out their view of their city and then presented it to the class. Stay tuned for the final project next month.

Feeding the Community: Street EATS2 has been stopping by HHYD for many years, delivering delicious food that is also healthy for our children.

Melinda Brown
Family and Community Liaison

My name is Melinda Brown. I grew up in North Minneapolis. I currently live in Roseville with my husband and 14-year-old son. Together, we have two children and two grandchildren. I’m thrilled to share that one of my grandchildren was born on June 28th, 2024. Children are a blessing!

I started as a Teacher at HHYD on March 4, 2024, but within a month, I transitioned to the Family and Community Liaison position. What I look forward to the most in my job is building lifelong relationships with our youth, working more closely with our families, and connecting the community to HHYD.

What is the best piece of advice I have received? Ummm… well, over the years, I’m sure there has been a LOT, too much even to say! But the best advice I would give teens is to be kind to themselves and give yourself some grace. Also, it’s okay to say no and change your mind.

My favorite chapter in the Bible is 1 Corinthians 13; if you haven’t read this chapter, I highly recommend it. It’s a beautiful reflection of love and kindness, which are values I hold dear. Two of my favorite quotes that are not from the Bible, but I believe align with the chapter, are, ” You must be the change you want to see in the world,” Gandhi, and “It’s not what you say; it’s how you say it.” Albert Mehrabian. These quotes, like the chapter, emphasize the importance of love, kindness, and the power of our actions and words.

What am I looking forward to doing this summer? We have a week off in August, so I look forward to uninterrupted family time, indulging in my love for cooking and finding new recipes. In addition to cooking and being with my family, I like to travel, watch television, and watch my son play basketball. Family is everything, and that’s why I believe in what HHYD does in the community; my position as Family and Community Liaison is vital, and I don’t take it lightly.

End of School Year Celebration

On June 7th, we celebrated the last day of the school year at Hospitality House Youth Development with our children. We had a pizza party, which included ice cream, great prizes for our Super Students, and lots of fun! Thank you to all our Teachers and Staff for a wonderful school year!

Keeping the Inner City Youth EMPLOYED:

At Hospitality House Youth Development, we hired 20 teens as Teacher aids (TAs). These teens went through a three-day training. At the conclusion of Summer Spot training we celebrated with our TA’s! We salute our teens for their dedication to making a difference in the lives of youth in our Northside community this summer.

HELP US PROVIDE A PLACE AND JOBS FOR OUR (Your) TEENS!

SUMMER SPOT has begun

On June 17, 2024, our children reported for Summer Spot. Summer is an exciting time for most children, but it can also be a time when they forget everything they’ve learned in the previous school year (referred to as the Summer Slide). Hospitality House Youth Development is proactive and preventive, we aim to prevent the Summer Slide and close the educational gap while having fun. Parents/Guardians bring the child(ren) to HHYD at 8:00 a.m. and pick them up at the end of the day. We have breakfast, chapel, math, and reading in the mornings. In the afternoon, it’s time for fun, which includes Freedom Camp, Chad Greenway Camp, movies, swimming, Science Museum visits, roller-skating, hiking, and more. Our Summer Spot program offers a supportive atmosphere for children to deepen their spirituality, enhance their academic prowess, and grow socially while having an amazing summer!

HHYD charges $300 per child for our 8-week program.

CHILD CARE COST, weekly averages:

Nanny $766

Day Care $321

Baby Sitter $192

SOURCE: CARE.COM and CBS Mornings

As you can see from these childcare numbers, HHYD is considerably lower cost, and rightfully so. We serve the underserved youth of North Minneapolis. Cost can be a hit to a two-parent working family. For our families, it is insurmountable and can mean the difference between leaving your children up to their own devices or the streets of Minneapolis.

Church Spotlight

On June 3rd and 4th, the Brookville Road Community Church, Indiana, members circled up and prayed for us. These were a group of high school students, the youngest being 13 years old, and some chaperones. They came to HHYD through the Praying Pelicans, who helped organize their mission trip to Minnesota.

We had about 20 folks from the church weed and re-plant our gardens, help us grade and record our post-tests, clean the inside and outside of our vans, spend time with our students, prepare our computers for our summer program, pray with all of us, and more. We greatly appreciate their heart for serving and their work at HHYD! THANK YOU!
